google trends- the social context for our horror?
google trends
Google is a public web facility of Google Inc. based on Google search results that show how frequently certain search items is entered linked to the total search-volume across several regions worldwide, also in several languages. This website was launched 11th May 2006, which is 10 years ago. The horizontal axis of the main graph represents time (starting from 2004), and the vertical is how often a term is searched for relative to the total number of searches, globally. Below the main graph, popularity is broken down by countries, regions, cities and language. Note that what Google calls "language", however, does not display the relative results of searches in different languages for the same term(s). It only displays the relative combined search volumes from all countries that share a particular language (see "flowers" vs "fleurs")

PHYSIOLOGICAL movies
Psychological horror is a subgenre of horror literature, film, television and video games (as a narrative) which relies on the character's fears and/or abnormal psyche to frighten readers, viewers or players.Psychological horror aims to create discomfort by exposing common or universal psychological and emotional vulnerabilities/fears and revealing the darker parts of the human psyche that most people may repress or deny. This idea is referred to in Jungian psychology as the archetypal shadow characteristics: suspicious, distrust, self-doubt and paranoia of others, themselves and the world.

zombie movies
Zombies are fictional creatures usually portrayed as reanimated corpses or virally infected human beings. They are commonly portrayed as cannibalistic in nature. While zombie films generally fall into the horror genre, some cross over into other genres, such as comedy, science fiction, thriller, or romance.
The image below shows the continents that have highly searched this genre, not only searched but watched the films, seen or used the images, YouTube videos (the trailers and gameplay) and more. The continents that have searched for this genre is America, Canada, Mexico and mainly in the North-West region. However there are small traces from some places such as Africa and lower regions of Asia, that enjoy the genre. Looking at the graph, zombie films were not as popular back in 2008, however since 2013, the rise in popularity of zombie films have risen and to this day. The top 5 zombie films and tv series are: Films

supernatural movies
Supernatural film is a genre that centers around supernatural elements, such as ghosts, gods, goddesses, and miracles. Supernatural films deal with the unknown questions of life; therefore, they tend to incorporate religious elements into the plot. The regional results is similar to the zombie films, however there is more amounts of results from the North-West section. And very little in the South-Western, the most results from this region in Australia. Whilst observing the graph, the sub-genre supernatural has been at a stand still since 2008. Even though the line goes up and down showing the popularity of the films and tv series of the genre, it still peaked and did not decline or rejuvenate.

The slasher film (sometimes referred to as body count films and dead teenager movies) is a sub-genre of horror film typically involving a psychopathic killer (sometimes wearing a mask) who stalks and graphically murders a series of adolescent victims in a typically random, unprovoked fashion, killing many. Again most of the regional results for this genre is in the North- Western area. However in other areas there is only two regions. After studying the graph, it shows that this sub-genre has not had a rise of interest over time, but it's at its peak all through 2004- present. Nevertheless, these are the top 5 films and tv series:

paranormal movies
Denoting events or phenomena such as telekinesis or clairvoyance that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. As you can see the most results from the regions is mainly in the Northern-West section. However in other area approximately 4 regions is included. This sub-genre is one of the most successful genres in throughout this research. After examining the graph, I've found that during the year of 2004, the other genres were gained more popularity.
However in the year of 2009-2010, paranormal genre had shooted rapidly exceeding the results of zombie, supernatural and slasher. In the year of 2012, the interest over time started to slowly slope and started to meander, until the recent years. The sub-genre started to increasingly decline. However the genre is still higher than slasher and supernatural. Also in the competition of the sub-genre zombie. These are the 5 top films and tv series:

in conclusion
After researching and studying several horror genres, we've decided that paranormal would be our sub-genre; simply because over the years (till now) this sub-genre is what captivated the audience the most and engaged them. More than the others.
