question 2
how effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The ancillary texts - the branding - were something we kept in mind as we designed the characters and story. The brand of the product can create new products or completely break down an entire franchise.
The primary theme we used for our film were relationships. We attempted to use parts of wedding vows in our titles and the words "From Me To You" are often linked to romance. The secondary theme we used were mirrors. They're presented as a gateway for the killer to return and wreak havoc once the victim has attempted to speak to her through it. We wanted to use it as a primary theme, however it was never featured prominently enough to warrant it in our minds.

The Exorcist
The exorcist is another well-known film and movie poster. The main colouring of this poster would be a combination of black and white. The colour black signifies evil, mystery and interestingly power. We found power interesting with the signification of black, because the little 12-year-old girl (Regan) was possessed by a 'powerful' force being a summoned demand, and the 'Exorcist' had to banish this force from Regan home and body. However, the white represents purity, innocence and safety. The colour white we thought fits with the title 'The Exorcist' because Exorcists responsibility is to not only remove demons from the possessed person, but to ensure that the possessed child (Regan) feels 'safe' and secured around the exorcist.
The man standing outside tells the audience that the man would be the exorcist, and make them curious as to who is going to be possessed. The light beaming in front of him, also tells the audience the importance of the man standing outside. Which is another reason why the audience would think the man is the exorcist. The font of the title is bold and is in the colour white. The font we thought is what got the audience's attention because it is clear and professional, and also it made the poster look more mysterious.

Star Wars
The initial release of Star Wars made the world almost come to a halt and quickly got people and fans engaged and hooked; this sparked marketing productions to create merchandises available to everyone everywhere. This means that the brand was being looked upon 24/7. The font used for the film 'Star Wars' has been labelled as iconic as almost anyone could recognise the brand, even if they've never seen the films, sequels and such. This is the many reasons in our group, we wanted to make our font simple as we thought simplicity is what makes a brand known and also look professional. The tagline in between the title pulls the image together, as this tagline has been used in the film which fans and nearly anyone would notice. |
iconic posters
The Blair Witch Project
The poster from 'The Blair Witch Project' is one of the many significant image which displays a characters blended into another image of woods, this provides the impression that they are in the woods indicating that this is where the film will be taken. Using woods as an image on a horror poster is typical as they are largely accompanied with the genre. The facial expression of the character suggests that she's frightened and the torch light illuminating the characters face provides the impression they could be hiding from something, this shows the genre of the film. The monochrome effect of the image is in maintaining the normal horror colour scheme (red, black and white) and also produces the poster more eerie, enhancing the evil that is in these woods. The Sinister
The Sinister is another iconic imagery that's initial release was based in 2013. All together the image isn't providing lots of information away, it still enables people to simply recognise the poster. The wall of the poster is meshed with cracks, scraped covering however plain; enough to display the paint and the girl to stand out. Yet, its not completely plain as it there's cracks and dust in the corners which creates an old fashioned room or building. The wall paint is a strategy used to represent death and mystery, it could also show the view of someone being possessed. The girl wearing which interprets that she could be innocent and vulnerable which shows a harsh contrast between her and the face against the wall. Thirteen Ghosts is one of the most eye-catching and gripping movie posters. The effective use of a woman's face covered with screaming faces we thought was fascinating and chilling. The black background helped make this poster look simple, and it also is good because it brings out the titles and face more. A close up shot of this face creates an atmosphere of uneasiness for the audience, which they find thrilling. However since this face is covered with faces, its almost as if its telling us a story from the audience's perspective. Eyes is said to be a portal into someone's soul, so since the expression of the woman's eyes look terrifying, and on that face lies countless faces. This suggests that in the film countless people are going to die and the facial expression of her face is their exact expression. Frightened.
The words 'This Halloween Evil has multiplied' is what attracted the audience to see the move. Simply because the word 'multiplied' suggests that Thirteen Ghosts is twice as intense and terrifying than the first '13 Ghosts' movie they've produced and distributed. The font of the main title 'Thirteen Ghosts' we found interesting, because some of the letters have light behind them and some don't like the 13, which is appealing. The font of these titles we also thought was mesmerizing, because it looked like the classical horror fonts; which the audience were attracted to. |

The white and red colours make the magazine stand out, as these colours are quite bold and would engage fans that do enjoy typical horror stereotypes. Another well-established magazine industry is FILM. The recent movie release is called 'Inception' starring Leonardo DiCaprio (plays Cobb), who is on this magazine cover. The machinery on buildings also gives us an insight of the character, the character maybe intelligent and he knows how to operate mechanisms.
